Overview in The Final Jury

Overview was second step of the final jury and this concept did not exist for previous years. That’s why it is a brand new concept and it is not new for but also new for TEDU Architecture department. In this concept, we discussed about our evaluation, challanging , our perspectives for the problems throughout the terms with our instructor and also with guests. In addition, we replied the questions that guests had. Actually, this concept was unique since there was not any construct, model, poster or diagram on the our around. Without these component, we could mention about our experiences and information which we obtained in the studio. For us, that situation provided to realise how much we improved.I hope that I will have this type final experience in the further.

The Final Jury

The final countdown was finished and It is the final!!! This is the first final experience in our architectural student life and It was so amazing, nervous and painful. During the preparation process, due to requirement list of the final jury, most of us probably had nervous time period. The reason for this is, the drawings that we were expected took high percentage of our time. That’s why everyone was so stressful. Also , while we were building our model for the jury, the pins that we used for keeping together the elements was torture our fingers because some them was unavailable for that usage and we had a really challenging and painful time.Even though all of these, seeing that we were rewarded for our efforts in final was so amazing thing for me.That’s why, I really appreciate for everyone that showed their effort for the final.

Yessss, It is time to start explaining my final construct to you.If you read the previous entries such as pre-jury, you are able to understand easily our concept because it has a still same strategy and tactics. However, I am going to mention about it shortly. In my final construct, there is one dense centre that was based on a vertical gap and one sparse centre that was based on a horizontal gap.(In the axonometric drawing, blue part is present vertical gap centre pattern, red part is also horizontal gap centre pattern and yellow is isolated gap). When you look at the middle of these gaps, you can see another gap which provide to isolation strategy. If we compare with pre- jury model, I used the long elements to isolate these two gap centres however, I decided that this idea is not enough to isolation for these two gaps. Long elements just separate centres from each other. That’s why, Instead of long elements, creating a gap for isolation is appropriate for my approach because It also provides a distance between centers and isolation ideas come up more legible and logical.

AXO - bayanex CopyIn terms of density, my approach was creating strong secondary relationship like initial relationship for density in my vertical gap center. My sticks are so vital for that quality because increasing the strength of the secondary relationship is providing with them. In the dense part, you are able to see very short distance between sticks and planar elements and this is the idea of the increasing strength of the secondary relationship. Opposite of this idea is valid for sparse, you are able to see long distance between planar elements and sticks and that is supplying weak second relationship.

The key of the terms that is based on all my experience is that creating your own building system for your works or construct.

Image Hunt

Image A shows an example of a repetitive pattern design, where a unit is repeated in a pattern that is organized within a grid structure. In image B, on the other hand, there is a single unit which is not repeated but which is designed in a figure-background relationship. The pattern in image A could have continued on any side if it was meant to be larger, yet the dimensions that frame the design in image B  is definite and meaningful in terms of the proportions of the figure to the ground, therefore would be difficult to change.

In the image A, there is repetitive pattern design that was used rectangle shapes and their varitations in terms of size and also you can predict the other steps that are not involved in this composition. In Additionally, it was organized within a grid structure. In the image B , we are able to see one single unit that has a two rectangles that they are variation of each other in itself. It is just single and there is no repetition. Because of that It is easy to comprehand and your eyes will not try to catch any continiuty in composition whereas in the image A there is continious flow, you will catch that point and are able to anticipate the next steps.

The Catalog For Tactics

05_CENTRALIZE

Heey, this is our catalog and If you read my loop tactics and pre jury entries you can comprehend easily what it is about. In this catalog, me and my friends present you our tactic assignments evaluation gradually like before after and their steps. Colored parts are our intervene zones and also you can see results of these operation in the end part. In addition, fallowing the flow chart will be beneficial to understand the order and our intention to solve problem. By the way, these catalog will be hang on our studio wall during the final day. If you want, you can also visit us and see them 🙂

The Pre-Jury

Pre-juryyyy. It was our second jury experience and also preparation of this pre-jury was so nervous. There was very strict time to prepare construct, diagram and orthographic projection of the construct. Due that situation, I have stayed 4 night in design studio however, I have managed circumstance even though I became older.

Before the jury, we picked a pattern that belongs the loop assignment and scaled it till at least one dimension being a 50 cm. That model was 3D diagram to create a pre jury construct and also for final construct. You can also see my 3D model below.

When I look at my model, the first idea that I thought was using isolation for strategy for my construct yet, How it will be possible? You can see that there is couple that is separated from the others. According to my idea, that part will be centre and the other isolated part will be another centre. Isolation is going to be between of these part to apart them each other. That’s why, centralization was my tactic for this construct. However, these centre’s should have been characteristic feature. That’s why, one part of this centre is going to be dense and other one will be sparse. Overall, I have isolated one dense centre and one sparse centre from each other. You can see my model in below.

IMG_4240 copy

In the pre jury model, there is one dense centre that was based on a vertical gap and one sparse centre that was based on a horizontal gap. When you look at middle of the you can also realize some blocking elements that are longer for isolation. To reach the dense quality, secondary relations were stronger in terms of distance as primary relationship and the opposite of that idea was applied on the sparse with increasing the distances between elements.

Adolf Loos’s Ornament and Crime

tumblr_nj8wilc5kp1r0ca37o1_1280

There is no any entry about ornament or decor until this post and this post is going to about Adolf Loos ideas of ornament and my interpretations as you realize. You probably encounter some ornaments on walls , pavement or some tool that you use in your daily life but have you ever thought about them? What is the function of them? or Are they necessary?  , If we lived in the past time, you would see literally in everywhere however, these questions are still so vital because there are plenty of ornament that we are able to see, when we look at the anywhere. This situation is changing gradually when the time is flowing and the reason of this changing is the new ideas about ornament like Adolf’s.

The basic reason is not directly related with Adolf. Actually, the population was increased and it is going on in every day. Due to that people’s necessities are going up. Specially the most important necessities are houses ,hospitals, stuff like that. Adolf is one of the people who had been aware what is happening and what will be happening in future. It was so obvious thing that while the population and the necessities of people is rising , we should fulfill at the same time. You can say that why ornament  is relevant with this situation. It is important because, ornament is an obstacle for us to fulfill these necessities as Adolf mentioned in this book. There are two main reason about being an obstacle of ornament.

The first reason of being an obstacle of ornament is that it does not have any function in terms of design. It is just repeating of the some master pieces qualities. What do you think about repeating some qualities that belongs the ancient terms? If you wonder my interpretation, they were satisfying necessities and approaching to design of people in that terms however, It is not valid for today. Conditions of today, the interpretation of beauty is different from that terms. Focusing on the problems and  designing something within the functions that is satisfying problems are criteria of beauty for today’s condition. Because of that, ornament is not a function that is able to solve problems and It is just an obstacle or trap for designer. If we do not use ornament , there will be no changing in the design in term of function.

The second reason of being an obstacle of ornament is that takes a lot of time and effort which designers have. Taking a lot of time and effort cause increasing cost of the works and due to that circumstance it is not beneficial for all people. The design diverted for wealthy society. This situation is contrast our mentality. According to our mentality, we design everything for all people necessities not just wealthy community. Moreover, due to that time is so profound for designers,  they prefer spend the time to solve another problem rather than using ornament in the design.

The Loop

To increase the relationship between the elements we were expected to produce loop in this assignment. However there was a restriction like that 29x37x43 prime numbers were give to us before the assignment. The Rule was giving us a option that we should pick two number for element size and the other number will be our number of elements. In my work, I preferred to use 43×37 for dimension and 29 elements for construct. While I am doing that, also there should be flow of relation in order to create a meaningful construct. In the below you can see my first construct and also my flow chart.

After the first draft, I was not satisfied from my work and decided to revise all of the loop construct. The reason of the unsatisfying is that there is no any patter between my relations. Pattern means that use some relation with a order. However this order should not be so strict because of creating a variations. After all of these I’ve experienced that these pattern provides a stability for the construct and variations catch the harmony the construct. Overall, we achieve a stabile, harmonious and stronger in terms of the first and second relationship construct.

In the last step, we produce same construct with just using stick to discover the function of sticks. When we use stick, you should think about lines since you are going to do abstraction of that construct. Lines have different type of relations according to planes because of the dimensions and you should catch the common relations between planer construct to show they are related each other. Thanks to that, they will be like father and son.

Collage Work

Collage means creating a new work with using combination of two different composition. While you  re doing that the significant thing is becoming  aware of the relationships that belongs to these two composition. The reason for this is you will create new composition and you should know what sort of a potentials in your hand since you are probably going to repeat these qualities ,creating a variation of them or designing a new relation with them. In my collage, you can see the continuity qualities in terms of shadows and vertical lines on the element. I repeated this quality also wanted to keep continuity in the whole composition.

Tactic Within Some Operations on the Loop Construct

This work was different according to other assignments. After the loop assignment, our instructor indicated promising constructs and flow charts and gather them in the pool. Also they prepared the keyword list that includes some words and also these words are antonyms. We picked randomly one word. The thing that was expected to us is intervening one pattern of the construct with respect to this specific word. My word was centralized and you can see the original construct and the intervened construct below.

I achieved centralized quality with some operations that are scale, split, addition and d-extrude. The definition of these words;

Scale = Changing the dimension of element with respect to proportions

Split=  Splitting the elements and using both of them in the construct

Addition= Addition a new element of course with respect to dimensions

D-Extrude= Transforming the elements to sticks with respect to elements lengths

Stretch= Changing the dimension of element with respect to just one single axis

Also, I used these operations with pattern and order and you can see them below.

FLOWsemih

While we were doing this assignment, we have buddy who has a antonym word. For instance, my word is centralized because of that reason my buddy has a decentralized concept. We worked as a group and shared our ideas to each other. As a result of that, there were plenty of centralize and decentralized ideas in every small groups.
